I am still workong with the idea of pale backgrounds (made of acrylic unbleached titanium and parchment) that highlight central images in bold colors (see previous paintings). To start with, I paint a gray wash over the whole canvas. Then I add unbleached titanium around the edges. After that, I apply some of the bold strokes and colors for the foreground, in this case browns, tans and oranges. Then I work on the background again, moving the parchment up to and into the edges of the central image.
The background is made more interesting by blending it with spots of the central colors so that it is not a flat, single color.
