Donating Abstract Painting to Cayuga Chamber Orchestra

This is the Cayuga Chamber Orchestra's second year to have local artists paint violins for a fundraising auction.  This year they are also offering other art by local artists, and I have donated one of my abstract paintings titled "Like a Diamond" to be auctioned off.

I used acrylic paint mixed with gloss medium and water to create overlapping translucent layers on this canvas.  The final step was to draw lines to emphasize shapes, creating a central focus for the eye.

The silent auction will take place at 6:45 pm on Saturday, May 7 at Ford Hall, Ithaca College, in Ithaca, NY.  The season finale concert will follow at 8 pm.

Most Expensive Pieces of Art Sold -- Artist Gets Nothing

For a list of the ten most expensive pieces of art ever sold, check out this article.  Artists on the list include Pollock, DeKooning, Klimt, Picasso, VanGogh and Renoir.  Top price is $151.2 million for a Jackson Pollock painting. 

Investor collectors keep buying and selling the same art hoping it will increase in value and bring them profits.  But how much of that money does the artist ever see?  Unfortunately, it's usually nothing beyond what the art brought in the first time it was sold. 

Some artists have been trying to change this by passing laws that require a collector to give the artist a royalty when the art is sold.  According to attorney Ann Avery Andres, California now has such a law requiring a collector to retain 5% of the resale price and give it to the artist within 90 days. 

I wonder if this law is still on the books?  And how can we pass it nation and world-wide?  What do you think about the fairness of such a law?

Three Abstract Paintings in Two Charity Art Shows Coming Up Soon

My abstract paintings will be in two art shows coming up which are run by charities to raise money for worthy causes:  the first, Ronald McDonald House; the second, WSKG, our public radio station in Binghamton, NY.  The art auction to benefit the Ronald McDonald House has published an Art Showcase magazine listing all the donated art. The art auction itself is on April 23 in Syracuse, NY.  Here are the two paintings I will have in this exhibit:

The second art charity, for public radio WSKG, is having a series of exhibitions this spring.  The next one will be in Hornell, NY from April 23 to 25.  Here's the painting WSKG will exhibit of mine:

The Haiti Art Fund auction closes Wednesday, March 31st, 2010 at 11:59 est.  Here's one of the drawings I donated to this auction:

Art Auction for Haiti: Donating an Abstract Drawing

Monkdogz Urban Art is holding a silent art auction to benefit the people of Haiti:  "100% of all proceeds will go directly to UNICEF, Partners in Health and Oxfam."  Monkdogz is asking artists to donate a 5" x 7" (13 cms x 18 cms) piece of flat art that can easily be mailed (a drawing, collage, print, painting without stretchers, etc.).  All the art will be displayed on their Haiti Art Fund website.
