ArtQuiver Sold One of My Abstract Paintings

Two week's ago, ArtQuiver sold my abstract painting titled Modern Art Two.  I always wait the two weeks to make an announcement because if the painting is returned within the first two weeks, the artist has to take it back.  When that period is over, I figure it is a completed sale.

Why do people return art they have purchased?  The reason I hear most often is that the painting did not fit the room's decor as the buyer had expected it to.  Many collectors will find another place for the art rather than return it.  But some really want it to fit a particular spot they've chosen for it, and if it doesn't, they will exchange it for one that fits better. 

That is perfectly fine because an art collector should be completely satisfied with their purchase.  It is still frustrating, however, for the artist getting a return.

Most Expensive Pieces of Art Sold -- Artist Gets Nothing

For a list of the ten most expensive pieces of art ever sold, check out this article.  Artists on the list include Pollock, DeKooning, Klimt, Picasso, VanGogh and Renoir.  Top price is $151.2 million for a Jackson Pollock painting. 

Investor collectors keep buying and selling the same art hoping it will increase in value and bring them profits.  But how much of that money does the artist ever see?  Unfortunately, it's usually nothing beyond what the art brought in the first time it was sold. 

Some artists have been trying to change this by passing laws that require a collector to give the artist a royalty when the art is sold.  According to attorney Ann Avery Andres, California now has such a law requiring a collector to retain 5% of the resale price and give it to the artist within 90 days. 

I wonder if this law is still on the books?  And how can we pass it nation and world-wide?  What do you think about the fairness of such a law?

A New Commission: Painting Abstract Art on Demand?

When I told my daughter that I just got a new commission, she asked, "How can you paint abstract art on demand?"  It seemed a contradiction to her, since I paint spontaneously and I never know how a painting is going to turn out.

My answer:  I can be spontaneous, yet use a particular palette of colors and have a general theme or composition in mind.  If a collector likes my work in general, I don't have trouble pleasing them. 

Nevertheless, I always paint two canvases in order give the collector a choice.  Painting two canvases also relieves me of the pressure to "make sure it comes out great." 

I've never had a collector refuse both choices, and often they like them both, even though they can only purchase one.  Here are a few of the commissions I've painted in the past:

 All are now hanging in good homes (or offices).
