Adding More Color to My Latest Abstract Painting

My latest abstract painting seemed too monochrome to me, and not quite finished.  I didn't want to add a lot of color because I felt that doing so would lose the nice free textural sense already there.  So I used pale washes of blue, alizarin crimson, burnt umber, and yellow-orange.  I also punched up the white and titanium, and added some yellow lines, feathering and spreading them with a brush.  After that, I added more emphasis to some of the colored sections by outlining them in black.

Session Three with New Abstract Painting in Spring Colors

In session two with this abstract painting on canvas, I applied a thin wash loosely and quickly, letting it happen by itself.  In today's session, I was much more contemplative and deliberate, adding more color where I thought it needed to be (stronger reds, for example), and clarifying the composition.  I filled in some of the lines I'd drawn previously, and painted over others.

New Abstract Drawing: Finding Order in Chaos

I began this abstract drawing by making random swirls in many colors: yellow, orange, red, green, blue.  It was just "background" at this point.  Then I made some stronger lines with black and dark brown.  But to really find order in the chaos, I filled in areas with fine parallel lines or solid color.  Gradually, sections became shapes and a composition evolved.
